Do you or have you ever had a Nickname?
I have been called “boy wonder”, by my stepfather. I can’t remember the specific reason for the nickname. I think it came from when I was in my 20’s, and I rarely gave up at anything that challenged me in life. Or, maybe it was because I never did anything wrong in my loving mother’s eyes, so he was just razzing me a little bit. He was not as blind to the truth, I obviously have made plenty of mistakes in life.
Who are you, and why are you in Murfreesboro?
That is a broad question, that I have honestly never been asked before. I will keep it short. I am a Dad, first and foremost, to 3 bright children who have helped me define the meaning of the word “joy”. I am a sibling, to one amazing brother who has always protected me, even when I did not deserve the protection. And, I am a son, to two wonderful parents, who helped mold me into the man I am today, and always made me feel loved. I hope I do the same for my own children.
I am originally from St. Louis, Mo. which is where I was first introduced to climbing, by way of skydiving and base jumping. I spent some time in Moab, Utah, jumping off cliffs, and I met some young climbers through a mutual friend. I spent a few years climbing in a local gym, before heading off to college, and getting distracted by life. I moved to Dallas for 10 years after undergrad, then relocated to Murfreesboro about 9 years ago. 22 years have passed, and Climb Murfreesboro recently reintroduced the sport of climbing into my life!
Why do you Climb or How has climbing changed your life?
Climb Murfreesboro has been such a blessing. It has given me a place where I can stay fit, challenge myself physically and mentally, and spend time with my 5 year old daughter Ansley, who loves to climb as well. I can’t explain how nice it is to have a place in Murfreesboro where we can both be active, spend quality time, and experience life together. I know that giving Ansley the opportunity to watch me, participate with me, and experience fitness together, at such a young age, will have a lasting impact on
her desire to live a healthy and balanced life as an adult. I have always lived by the idea that our children do what we do, not what we say. Climb Murfreesboro has given me another important opportunity to demonstrate healthy living, all while having a ton of fun! The “gym” is no longer something I have to check off my list of things to do, before the end of the day. It’s now my home away from home, and my daughter is right there with me.
What’s your current climbing goal or life goal?
My current life goals are to connect with more people outside of my immediate circle of family and friends, make more time for meaningful life experiences, stay healthy and fit for my young daughter, and discover what brings me and my family joy, so I can cultivate it.
What’s Rad about your life right now, on or off the wall?
I recently got back from a 2 week work trip to the Philippines. It was an amazing cultural experience that I will never forget. We worked of course, but I also got to spend a lot of time with a local charitable organization (Young Focus), that is focused on helping underprivileged children, get back in school. It was emotional, and amazing, all at the same time.
